Reinhardt alumnus Rod Norton will address developing a personal code of ethics on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
Reinhardt alumnus Rod Norton ’14 will speak on developing a personal code of ethics on Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.

Reinhardt University welcomes Rod Norton, a 2014 MBA graduate from Reinhardt’s McCamish School of Business, as a speaker for the McCamish School/Knox Foundation for Ethics-sponsored lecture series. This free event is open to the public and will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Bannister Glasshouse/Hasty Student Life Center on Reinhardt’s Waleska, Ga. campus.

Developing a personal code of ethics

Dr. Katherine E. Hyatt, associate professor of business, has coordinated Reinhardt’s ethics activities in recent years. She invited Norton to speak because she was impressed by a memorable ethics presentation he gave during his MBA coursework.  His speech will address how to use one’s personal experiences, relationships and society in building a personal code of ethics.

Norton’s undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership and Management, is also from Reinhardt. He has more than 16 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, having spent 10 years with a major wireless carrier and six years as a consultant and executive providing strategic services and network infrastructure to major wireless carriers. Before working in telecommunications, Norton worked in real estate construction and residential and commercial project development. He was site manager for the inaugural beach volleyball venue at the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta.

The Knox Foundation for Ethics promotes ethics education at Reinhardt

The Knox Foundation was established by longtime Reinhardt trustee and friend, the late Pete Knox of Thomson, Ga., to promote ethics education. His son, the late Boone A. Knox, continued to support the Foundation’s efforts after his father’s death and throughout his own life. In recent years, Reinhardt has hosted panel discussions and essay contents, in addition to lectures, to examine ethics.

Reinhardt alumnus Amy Fernandez Geiger '14 spoke on the impact of social media on business ethics on Oct. 20, 2015.

Alumna Takes Reins of Fund Raising & Church Relations

Alumna Dale Scarlett Morrissey ’76 ’99 Returns to her Alma Mater to Take the Reins of Reinhardt’s Fund Raising and Church Relations; Barbara Manous Retires from Her Role of 18 Years

Dale MorrisseyA Reinhardt alumna of more than 30 years returned to her alma mater last week in a different role. Dale Scarlett Morrissey ’76 ’99 is now the Director of Fund Raising Campaigns and Church Relations. She assumes the role from long-standing staff member Barbara Manous who served Reinhardt for more than 18 years.

“Reinhardt has always been close to my heart,” said Morrissey. “After high school graduation, I enrolled at Reinhardt and have been involved ever since.

“I worked [at Reinhardt] during college in the business office. I handled the student bank; I guess that is where my banking career started! Doris Jones in the business office was my mentor, and it will be a pleasure to see her once again on campus.”

Serving more than 37 years in the banking industry, Morrissey most recently held the position of vice president/branch manager at Hamilton State Bank (fka Cherokee Bank). Prior to that, she served in various capacities with Community and Southern Bank (fka First Cherokee State Bank), including business development officer, branch manager and security officer.

Rooted in Reinhardt.

Morrissey’s path first came back to Reinhardt later in her career when she managed a bank across the street from Reinhardt. “I was so close to the University that I decided to complete my college education, and earned a bachelor of science in business administration in 1999.”

Working with Reinhardt’s A Day Committee and Alumni Board of Governors allowed Morrissey to keep close ties to Reinhardt through the years. From 2005-07, she served as Board President, and from 2014-15, she was the A DAY chair.

“When approached about the possible position at Reinhardt, I felt it was a good time for a career change,” said Morrissey. “Banking was part of my life for so long, and I feel my roots at Reinhardt helped me obtain the success stories that I have.

Born in Pickens County, Morrissey currently resides in Cherokee County. Married to “Coach” Todd Morrissey, who teaches and coaches at Sequoyah High School, together they have three adult children, Noah, Nicholas and Nicole, and two grandchildren. They are members of Hickory Flat Methodist Church.

“…big shoes to fill!”

Morrissey and Manous“I look forward to giving back to Reinhardt and connecting to those in the community that have not yet been introduced to such a unique University. It is a special place, and I am excited about this new opportunity. Barbara has done an exceptional job at Reinhardt and will be missed. I have some big shoes to fill!”

Morrissey takes on the role from 18-year staff member Barbara Manous. “I have enjoyed my years at Reinhardt, and dearly loved my job,” said Manous. “I especially enjoyed my association with faculty and staff, and members of the community.”

While at Reinhardt, Manous was responsible for three golf tournament fundraisers and A DAY for Reinhardt, all of which comprise one quarter of the University’s Annual Fund. Throughout her years at Reinhardt, Manous raised more than $4.9 million for the Annual Fund.

Leaving a legacy; Leading a new generation.

“Reinhardt has been blessed to have Barbara Manous lead the Fund Raising Team for many years,” said JoEllen Wilson, vice president of advancement. “She has legions of friends here at Reinhardt and in this community. We plan to call on her often in the future.

“I do not believe we could have found a more capable person to step into the fund raising role than Dale,” Wilson continued. “As an alumna, she knows the University, and her contacts in the community are unmeasurable. I enjoy working with both these professional, charming women.”

President Isherwood Announces His Departure Effective June 30, 2015

University President Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood Announces His Departure from Reinhardt Effective June 30, 2015

Dr. Thomas IsherwoodOn March 18, 2014, Reinhardt’s 19th president, Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood, announced he would be leaving the University on June 30, 2015. He was selected as Reinhardt’s president by the institution’s Board of Trustees on April 2, 2002, and he had served in the office since July 1, 2002.

Guiding the University in a positive direction for continued success.

After discussing his decision with the Executive Committee of Reinhardt’s Board of Trustees, he informed the entire board, as well as faculty and staff, via email. “I am very proud of the work we have done together, and I will always be thankful that you have given me the opportunity to serve you and our students,” he said. “Next year will be my 13th at Reinhardt, and I believe it is a good time for change. In 2015 we will be completing our second meaningful five-year plan, and I believe the University is in a positive position for even more success. I am very confident that the announcement of this leadership opportunity will draw interest from excellent and qualified people across the United States.”

“…a focused and effective leader for Reinhardt.”

Board of Trustees Chair William G. Hasty, Jr. commended Isherwood for the job he has done as president. “Tom Isherwood has been a focused and effective leader for Reinhardt,” Hasty said. “During his tenure, even though the economy has made success very difficult to achieve for small private institutions of higher education, Reinhardt has enjoyed increased enrollment, program expansion and loyal financial support. I look forward to continuing this positive momentum as we prepare for a change in senior leadership.”

A presidential search is often a year-long process, which was part of Isherwood’s rationale for an early announcement. “The search for new leadership is one of the most exciting times in the life of an institution,” Isherwood said. “I want to give the Board full advantage of an early announcement so that they have time to engage the entire Reinhardt community in this process. I am confident that the trustees will exercise this responsibility with wisdom and grace.”

Reinhardt has experienced significant growth under Isherwood’s leadership.

Since Isherwood’s arrival, Reinhardt has experienced much growth. Reinhardt’s student body has grown from 1083 to 1402, fund raising has brought in approximately $42.7 million, and at least 20 buildings or facilities have been built or significantly renovated. Academic program offerings have expanded from 17 to 41, the number of full-time faculty has grown from 54 to 80, and the number of intercollegiate sports has grown from 10 to 17. Graduate degree, online programs and a Police Academy have been added, and in 2010, the institution name was changed from Reinhardt College to Reinhardt University.

“When I arrived, Reinhardt did not yet have the program diversity we needed,” Isherwood said. “Our program growth, as well as our offerings for working adults and graduate students, was prompted by faculty creativity and hard work. As we have added faculty, we have looked for caring instructors with solid credentials, creativity and experience – professionals who emphasize a commitment to teaching, mentoring, community service and scholarship. We also invested in the performing arts, athletics and the sciences. Our fund raising successes have made all this expansion possible.”

“I have been humbled and honored to be president.”

Isherwood doesn’t like the word “retire” and doesn’t plan to coast during his remaining months as Reinhardt president. Isherwood and his wife, Bettye Jo, have a home in Big Canoe, Ga., and they plan to remain in the area. “We will continue to be involved in our community,” he said. “We have made wonderful friends and have found Big Canoe to be an exciting and welcoming place to live.”

In his email to faculty and staff he stated, “While we will have time in the next year to reminisce, we will also have a great and busy year as we together prepare the University for the future. I have been humbled and honored to be president of this wonderful place and to serve with you. I plan to leave with energy and enthusiasm.”

Faculty Members Honored for Dedication to the University

Reinhardt Honors Faculty Dedication with Presentation of Six Awards

At the final Faculty Senate meeting of the academic year, University administrators underscored the crucial role that faculty play in making Reinhardt a true community of challenge and care. Among the outstanding faculty honored at the meeting were Phil Unger, Dr. Donna Coffey, Dr. Anne Good, Dr. John Yelvington, Elizabeth Smith and Dr. Curt Lindquist.

Jane England Faculty Award for Excellence

Phil Unger

Phil Unger, assistant professor of history, was honored with the Jane England Faculty Award for Excellence. The $500 award is named for a long-time Reinhardt faculty member who retired in May 2001 and passed away in January 2007. England was a professor of history and political science for 31 years at Reinhardt. She also served in numerous leadership roles, including advisor to the student newspaper and faculty chair. Upon her retirement, Reinhardt established this annual faculty award, along with a scholarship fund, in her honor.

“I thought the Jane England Award acknowledged not so much my efforts, but the many projects I had the good fortune to become involved with that were initiated by and carried forward by so many of the faculty members in their various committees and service to the university,” said Unger. “I also would like to acknowledge the support and involvement of the late Dr. Bob Driscoll [former vice president of academic affairs] who encouraged the development of such programs as First Year Seminar and early intervention efforts. All these initiatives that were mentioned when I was nominated for the award are works still very much in progress, and a lot more remains to be done. I hope the award encourages continued efforts.”

Upon the acceptance of the award, Unger pledged to give the funds awarded to him, in addition to funds of his own, to found a scholarship in honor of Dr. Driscoll. He challenged other faculty to support the fund so that a scholarship could be awarded annually to a Reinhardt student who is helping the community. Unger, a resident of Johns Creek, Ga., has taught at Reinhardt for more than seven years.

Dr. Anne Good

Dr. Anne Good, assistant professor of history, received a Faculty Research and Scholarship Award for the publication of her article on childbirth and infancy at the Cape of Good Hope in the early eighteenth century that was published in the “Journal of History of Childhood and Youth.” Good, a resident of White, Ga., has taught at Reinhardt for more than seven years.

“I worked on this article for more than three years, almost exclusively during summers and holidays, so this award means a lot to me,” Good said. “I was inspired to write the article because I teach a course on the History of Children and Childhood here at Reinhardt. In return, the detailed research that I did has certainly had a great impact on several of the courses that I teach. I feel strongly that scholarship and teaching go hand-in-hand. I am so honored to have received this award.”

Dr. John Yelvington

Also honored for research, Dr. John Yelvington, assistant professor of economics and a resident of John’s Creek, Ga., who has taught at the University for more than 11 years. He was the lead author on a paper on students’ satisfaction with online Intermediate Accounting courses.

The Rev. Dr. Curt Lindquist

Honored with the Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award was The Rev. Dr. Curt Lindquist, professor of religion and philosophy. Lindquist, who is a resident of Decatur, Ga., has taught at the University for more than 18 years.

“I am honored to be the recipient of the Vulcan Teaching Award. Reinhardt has many gifted ‘teachers,’” said Lindquist. “Like any craft, teaching well is a result of constant attention and work. Some faculty are publicly honored; many faculty are more privately honored by comments from fellow faculty, from staff colleagues, and from individual students. I am grateful to be part of a university which has so many wonderful exemplars of teaching.”

Vulcan’s Southeast Division has sponsored the Teaching Excellence Award since the early 1990s through the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges, Inc. The award is presented to a faculty member at each of the GFIC’s 25-member institutions, in recognition of outstanding contributions to undergraduate education, student learning, and campus life.
