MPA to graduate first class Dec. 2014; A new cohort to begin Jan. 2015

Reinhardt will graduate first class from Master of Public Administration degree program December 2014; A new cohort will begin Jan. 2015

Reinhardt University will graduate its first group of students from the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program this December. The students will graduate after 16 months of coursework and study, compared to many institutions where the programs are two years.

Diverse Personal and Professional Backgrounds

“Our first cohort to graduate with the MPA come from diverse personal and professional backgrounds,” said Dr. Karen Owen, director of the MPA. “They have shown great determination in mastering the field, and each has worked diligently to succeed in each endeavor of the program. Their commitment to the program and to each other as a cohort is remarkable and a true value to the University and the faculty of the program.”

Graduates will be “well-trained and versed in the field of Public Administration.”

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at Reinhardt University provides a high-quality generalist, practice-oriented, research-based, and ethics-focused program to educate and prepare students for professional and leadership careers in the public service.

“Students who graduate with an MPA degree from Reinhardt are well-trained and versed in the field of Public Administration,” said Owen. “These graduates are prepared for public service careers. They are, all, qualified to lead public and/or nonprofit agencies and to serve the public good in our communities and the state. These students are energetic about utilizing their new leadership and management skills to initiate and lead changes in public policy as well as make an impact on individuals’ lives and communities.”

Knowledgeable and Professional Faculty

Extremely knowledgeable, talented and professional faculty members are a testament to what makes Reinhardt’s MPA so successful. The instructors have extensive field experiences. Many are city managers, directors of public or nonprofit departments, or career administrators who enhance the textbook research and knowledge with their practical skills and real life lessons.

“Graduate programs are mostly comprised of students that are already in the work force that have family responsibilities (spouse and children),” said graduating MPA student Wayne Williams. “Though the course work is very demanding, Reinhardt’s MPA faculty were flexible at times to support the occasional issues that arose for some students, which is a testament to their understanding of how demanding life can be while attending school. The faculty were incredible at what they brought into the classroom and were able to share and/or teach to the class.”

Hybrid-Style Program in a Cohort Format

Reinhardt’s MPA is unique in that students participate in a hybrid-style graduate program, whereby they take courses online and in the classroom. Each semester, students take three courses in a cohort format: one 16-week online course and two face-to-face courses which last for eight weeks each. This schedule gives students full-time status, but only have two courses have to be managed at any one time, and being within a cohort, the interaction and shared experience leads to a cohesive, collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Specialize in Criminal Justice or State and Local Administration.

“The program has two areas of specialization – Criminal Justice and State and Local Administration,” Owen said. “We are fortunate to have strong partnerships with faculty and leaders within the Public Safety environment, Reinhardt’s Police Academy, and local and state professional associations. These partnerships allow our students to participate in conferences, present research and build relationships with top-professionals in the Public Administration field.”

The MPA is offered at the convenient location of Reinhardt’s North Fulton Center on Old Milton Pkwy in Alpharetta, Ga., and is easily accessible to the Northern Arc law enforcement agencies, governmental entities, non-profits and businesses.

“A degree that will set me apart from my colleagues.”

“Reinhardt’s program has proven to highlight the many details required to successfully lead and manage in the field of Public Administration,” said graduating MPA student David St. Onge. “Most of all, my completion of the program has demonstrated a commitment to public service and a desire to further my career.

“My degree will, without question, set me apart from my colleagues,” St. Onge said. “Topics learned will be regularly translated into everyday practices. This mastery of concepts taught in Reinhardt’s MPA program will propel my career into a direction that I am in control of.”

New Cohort to Begin Jan. 2015; Apply today!

A new cohort for Reinhardt’s MPA program will begin Jan. 2015. The application process has several steps so interested students are encouraged to apply early. If all application materials are submitted by Dec. 1, the application fee ($50) will be waived. President Isherwood Announces His Departure Effective June 30, 2015

University President Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood Announces His Departure from Reinhardt Effective June 30, 2015

Dr. Thomas IsherwoodOn March 18, 2014, Reinhardt’s 19th president, Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood, announced he would be leaving the University on June 30, 2015. He was selected as Reinhardt’s president by the institution’s Board of Trustees on April 2, 2002, and he had served in the office since July 1, 2002.

Guiding the University in a positive direction for continued success.

After discussing his decision with the Executive Committee of Reinhardt’s Board of Trustees, he informed the entire board, as well as faculty and staff, via email. “I am very proud of the work we have done together, and I will always be thankful that you have given me the opportunity to serve you and our students,” he said. “Next year will be my 13th at Reinhardt, and I believe it is a good time for change. In 2015 we will be completing our second meaningful five-year plan, and I believe the University is in a positive position for even more success. I am very confident that the announcement of this leadership opportunity will draw interest from excellent and qualified people across the United States.”

“…a focused and effective leader for Reinhardt.”

Board of Trustees Chair William G. Hasty, Jr. commended Isherwood for the job he has done as president. “Tom Isherwood has been a focused and effective leader for Reinhardt,” Hasty said. “During his tenure, even though the economy has made success very difficult to achieve for small private institutions of higher education, Reinhardt has enjoyed increased enrollment, program expansion and loyal financial support. I look forward to continuing this positive momentum as we prepare for a change in senior leadership.”

A presidential search is often a year-long process, which was part of Isherwood’s rationale for an early announcement. “The search for new leadership is one of the most exciting times in the life of an institution,” Isherwood said. “I want to give the Board full advantage of an early announcement so that they have time to engage the entire Reinhardt community in this process. I am confident that the trustees will exercise this responsibility with wisdom and grace.”

Reinhardt has experienced significant growth under Isherwood’s leadership.

Since Isherwood’s arrival, Reinhardt has experienced much growth. Reinhardt’s student body has grown from 1083 to 1402, fund raising has brought in approximately $42.7 million, and at least 20 buildings or facilities have been built or significantly renovated. Academic program offerings have expanded from 17 to 41, the number of full-time faculty has grown from 54 to 80, and the number of intercollegiate sports has grown from 10 to 17. Graduate degree, online programs and a Police Academy have been added, and in 2010, the institution name was changed from Reinhardt College to Reinhardt University.

“When I arrived, Reinhardt did not yet have the program diversity we needed,” Isherwood said. “Our program growth, as well as our offerings for working adults and graduate students, was prompted by faculty creativity and hard work. As we have added faculty, we have looked for caring instructors with solid credentials, creativity and experience – professionals who emphasize a commitment to teaching, mentoring, community service and scholarship. We also invested in the performing arts, athletics and the sciences. Our fund raising successes have made all this expansion possible.”

“I have been humbled and honored to be president.”

Isherwood doesn’t like the word “retire” and doesn’t plan to coast during his remaining months as Reinhardt president. Isherwood and his wife, Bettye Jo, have a home in Big Canoe, Ga., and they plan to remain in the area. “We will continue to be involved in our community,” he said. “We have made wonderful friends and have found Big Canoe to be an exciting and welcoming place to live.”

In his email to faculty and staff he stated, “While we will have time in the next year to reminisce, we will also have a great and busy year as we together prepare the University for the future. I have been humbled and honored to be president of this wonderful place and to serve with you. I plan to leave with energy and enthusiasm.”

Leaves of Gold Essay Contest Open to All Students; Submissions Due by Oct. 15

Leaves of Gold Essay Contest Open to All Students; Submissions Due by Oct. 15

We are very pleased to announce the first essay contest sponsored by the collaborative efforts of the Student Government Association and the School of Arts and Humanities at Reinhardt University.

“This essay contest, Leaves of Gold, promises to display the artistic abilities of many students at Reinhardt,” said Casey Robinson, SGA secretary. “The role of the Student Government Association will be to assist in funding the prizes that will be given to the winners of the contest, which will include:  first, second, and third place winners, as well as one honorable mention.”

Essay Contest Committee

Dr. Theresa Ast, will serve as chair of the Essay Contest Committee.  Dr. Ast graduated from Emory University with a degree in Modern European History, has served as a professor of History for fifteen years at Reinhardt, and is currently the Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program.  Her co-chair, Dr. Margaret M. Morlier graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in English.  Dr. Morlier is the Associate Vice President for the Graduate Studies Program at Reinhardt and is a professor of English. Casey Robinson, Student Senate Secretary, will serve as the Student Government Association liaison on the committee.  Dr. Ast and Dr. Morlier will also serve as judges for the contest.

Contest Has Received Great Acclaim

In addition to the great acclaim that the contest has received by the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, the faculty of the School of Arts and Humanities, and the Reinhardt Faculty Senate, Leaves of Gold has received further attention that is worth noting. Marcia K. Smith, a published and well-known author, has agreed to come on as a third party judge for the contest. Marcia graduated from The University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism.  As a military wife she traveled widely, both inside and outside the United States.   From 2000 to 2003 she was the editor of The Paulding Neighbor—a weekly paper.  From 2003-2004 she was the “Government” reporter for The Cherokee Tribune—a daily newspaper. More recently, as a freelance writer, she has published her memoir, “My War,” about Saudi Arabia.  Marcia also published and a collection of poetry, “These Lines,” and two novels under her pen name Kathleen Cochran, “Take This Man” and “A Working Title Memory.”

Leaves of Gold has attracted the attention of the following benefactors: Anton J. Zellman and Joan McFather. Mr. Zellman will be presenting each of the winners with a copy of his book, titled “I Read Minds—and So Do You”, and Mrs. McFather will be sponsoring the first place prize with a very generous donation.

Contest Details

Furthermore, the winning submissions will be posted on the Reinhardt University website (reinhardt.edu), as well as in the Reinhardt University Literary Magazine, Sanctuary, which is managed by Honors Program Coordinator, Dr. Donna Coffey.

Student submissions will be due on October 15, 2013 with the winners being announced on November 12, 2013 at the Reinhardt Faculty Senate Meeting.

“…soar to their highest potential.”

“As a major sponsor for the essay contest, the Student Government Association would like to see the students of Reinhardt University soar to their highest potential,” said Robinson. “We believe that in order to do so, academic recognition in opportunities such as this are vital and should be counted among a student’s greatest achievements.”
