Reinhardt University Mathematics Faculty and Students Host Cherokee County Mathematics Tournament
On Saturday, November 12, 2011, Reinhardt University mathematics faculty and students are hosting the 2011-12 Reinhardt/Cherokee County School District Mathematics Tournament. Each of the county’s high schools will be sending approximately eight students — four who will compete on the varsity level (grades 10-12) and four who will compete on the junior varsity level(grades 8-9) . Home school students have also been invited to compete in the tournament.
The tournament will take place in the Hoke O’Kelley Auditorium on Reinhardt University’s campus in Waleska, Ga., from 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.
Mathematics Tournament Format
The tournament will consist of two phases. In the first phase, ciphering teams will be split in two for a three-round sequence of five timed single-questions, two minutes each. In the second phase, about one hour long, a multiple choice test will be individually completed and graded for both team and individual scores.
Calculator usage
Calculator use will be required for some questions and permitted for any question. Any calculator that has a symbolic algebra system (like TI-89 and above) will not be permitted.
Mathematics Tournament Prizes
Prizes will be awarded at the end of the tournament. All winners will receive a special medallion commemorating the event. The winner of the individual varsity competition will automatically be admitted to the Math & Science Dean’s Scholarship competition at Reinhardt University. At the varsity level, the following scholarships will be awarded if the winners choose to attend Reinhardt:
- first place: a $500 Reinhardt scholarship ,
- second place: $400 Reinhardt scholarship
- third place: $300 Reinhardt scholarship.
