Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day – Saturday, October 27, sponsored by Reinhardt Allied Health Club and Cherokee County Sherriff’s Office/CMANS
Do you have prescription drugs that are out of date? Not sure how to dispose of medicines that you don’t need anymore? Then bring your old prescription drugs to Boling Park in Canton, Ga. (Hwy. 5) between 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on Saturday, October 27, 2012, for Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day. This event is sponsored by Reinhardt University’s Allied Health Club, in conjunction with the Cherokee County Sherriff’s Office – Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad (CMANS).
Chemicals can be harmful to humans and wildlife.
“When pills enter the environment and then break down, they can release chemicals that can be harmful to humans and wildlife, even if the pill itself was not harmful,” said Danielle Satre, assistant professor of biology and advisor of the Allied Health Club. “When disposed of incorrectly, these chemicals enter the watershed, potentially affecting all of our water systems, which can have serious implications in many species, especially aquatic organisms; therefore, proper disposal is more important than ever.”
The proper way to dispose of prescription drugs.
CMANS agents and Allied Health Club members will be on hand to collect the prescription drugs dropped off for disposal. The community is strongly encouraged to participate in this event.
“The prescription drug take back program was designed to provide a means for the proper disposal of prescription drugs,” said Walter Jones, agent with CMANS. “Until these programs existed prescription drugs were routinely thrown away or discarded into the sewer systems. In addition to events like this one, the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad has placed permanent pill drop-boxes throughout Cherokee County at the Holly Springs Police Department, Canton Police Department and Woodstock Police Department so that residents can properly dispose of these drugs at any time.”
