Reinhardt Price School of Education Announces Scholarship Winners

A select group of education majors at Reinhardt University were recently selected to receive the Price School of Education’s most prestigious scholarships. The Gene Norton Scholarship in Education was awarded to students Bonnie Abernathy and Eric Burkhalter, and the Cherokee County Retired Educators Association Scholarship was awarded to students Kyle George, Stacey Richards and Morgan Johnson.

Gene Norton Scholarship in Education

“Gene Norton [class of 1960] has been an educator for over fifty years, serving in the Cherokee County School System in numerous roles, including as a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent,” said Dr. James Curry, dean of PSOE. “The scholarship in his name is in honor of his many contributions to the field of education.”

Awarded this scholarship of $450 each were Bonnie Abernathy (top photo left), a senior middle grades education major from Adairsville, Ga., who is currently completing her coursework, and will student teach in spring semester 2015; and Eric Burkhalter (top photo right), a senior middle grades education major from Canton, Ga., who is currently candidate teaching.

Cherokee County Retired Educators Association Scholarship

“For several years, the Cherokee County Retired Educators Association has provided scholarship money for Reinhardt students in the Price School of Education who are aspiring to become educators,” said Curry. “It’s their way of encouraging and supporting young people who have chosen the same career path as themselves.”

Selected to receive the CCREA Scholarship of $500 each were Canton, Ga. residents Kyle George (bottom photo from left), a senior early childhood education major, who is completing his last semester of coursework, and will student teach in spring semester 2015; Stacey Richards, a senior early childhood education major, who is currently candidate teaching and will graduate this December; and Morgan Johnson, a senior early childhood education major, who will begin her final semester of coursework in spring 2015, and will candidate teach in fall semester 2015.

Scholarship Criteria

The Cherokee Retired Educators Association Scholarship criteria requires that the student be officially admitted to the Price School of Education, have a 3.5 GPA in their college coursework, and be a Cherokee County resident. For the Gene Norton Scholarship in Education, a student must be admitted to the Price School of Education, have a 3.0 GPA in their college coursework, be at the sophomore level
