Schultze Named AAC Defensive Player of Week for Men’s Soccer

SchultzeReinhardt University men’s soccer player Zack Schultze was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his play from Aug. 29-Sept. 4. It marks the second time in his career that Schultze has earned the weekly conference honor. Additionally, he was chosen as the Southern States Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week three times as a freshman in 2008.
           
Schultze, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound senior goalkeeper from Newnan, Ga., played 225 minutes in goal as Reinhardt began its season last week by going 3-0 in three games that took place away from home. He made 10 saves and allowed just one goal as the Eagles outscored their opponents 16-1. Schultze posted a shutout in Reinhardt’s 2-0 win over John Brown University and combined on a shutout in a 12-0 victory at Tennessee Temple University.
           
Schultze earned Second Team All-SSAC honors in 2008, the same year that he was once selected as the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week. He was also a member of the AAC All-Academic Team in both 2009 and 2010.
           
Within the AAC, Schultze currently ranks second in goals against per game (0.40), tied for fifth in total saves and tied for sixth in saves per game (3.33).
           
The Eagles, who are off to one the best starts in school history, play their 2011 home opener on Saturday against the Martin Methodist College RedHawks. The non-conference match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Ken White Soccer Field.
