New Science Center to be Dedicated
Sept. 17, 2013, at Noon – Samuel C. Dobbs Science Hall Plaza
A new 12,000 square-foot addition to the Samuel C. Dobbs Science Hall welcomed its first classes on August 19, 2013—Reinhardt’s first day of classes for fall semester. In addition to the Dobbs Science Hall’s recently renovated facilities, the new structure includes three additional labs plus two advanced research labs, four classrooms, and four office spaces.
Expanding Scientific Instruction
The new Science Center will emphasize undergraduate scientific research. As Reinhardt expands its scientific instruction, University planners can start to consider health professions such as nursing and medical technology.
“By 2018 Georgia will need to fill 211,000 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related jobs,” said Lauren Thomas, media relations coordinator, citing the Alliance for Science and Technology Research in America. “This stucture will provide our students with the capabilities and resources to be successful in the classroom while they attend Reinhardt, and then transfer those skills and strengths into their future career in the science field/s.”
State-of-the-Art Technology and Facilites
Science faculty members are already enjoying having the additional space that was designed with their needs in mind. Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Irma Santoro said the new science center “is allowing us… to finally undertake laboratory experiments that we have not been able to do because of very little space…We finally are able to separate lab and lecture so that we can set up for the lab prior to the class. This will, in the future, allow us to incorporate more involved labs into the curriculum.”
Gracious Donors Provided Building’s Funding
The $4.5 million needed for the state-of-the-art building’s construction was initially funded with $2 million from the George Lawson Estate. Reinhardt trustees and the Northside Hospital Foundation pledged or donated almost $1 million, and the Woodruff Foundation completed the remaining needed funding with a $1.5 milion gift.
President Dr. Thomas Isherwood recognizes the generous supporters who made this new science center possible. “It’s inspiring to look back and see who this building project has come together. I’m thankful for all our donors for believing in Reinhardt, and for the two foundations for agreeing to help us meet this need.
Science Center Dedication – Sept. 17, 2013 at Noon – Samuel C. Dobbs Science Hall
Join Reinhardt students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to thank donors and dedicate the new Science Center on September 17, 2013, at Noon outside on the Dobbs Science Hall plaza. Remarks will be provided by Isherwood; William G. Hasty, Jr. ’67, Reinhardt Board of Trustees chair; Maria Flores, SGA president; and Dr. William DeAngelis, Dean of the School of Mathematics and Sciences.
“The new science addition will make a strong impression on future, potential and current students, not only because we are building new facilities, but because Reinhardt is growing to meet the needs of our students,” said Isherwood. “Please join us on this special day to recognize those who made this building a reality for our students.”
