Thursday nights in Waleska, Ga. will be the talk-of-the-town once again as the Waleska Farmers Market at Reinhardt University hosts its opening night May 2 and continues on through the spring, summer and fall with markets every Thursday, May 2- October 24, and new this year, markets every Monday, July 1-29.
“This year will be a big one for the Waleska Farmers Market,” said Zach White, Reinhardt horticulturist and market coordinator. “Last year we were open every week on Thursday nights just through August. But with such an overwhelming response of vendors wanting to participate and customers wanting to shop, this year the Market is every Thursday night through October 24, and in July, every Monday night too! This will give our vendors more opportunities to sell their produce and goods and more opportunities for customers to purchase them. It’s a win-win for everyone!”
Special Events
In May there will be a ‘Deer Resistant Plant Night’ in which speakers will discuss deer resistant plants for Waleska and have plant giveaways. Additionally, the Cherokee County Master Gardeners will provide a list of deer resistant plants published by the UGA extension service.
This summer will feature the return of the “Waleska Blooms” Photo Contest, Squash Dish Recipe Contest, and the Pie Championship Week, including a pie eating contest on Monday and a pie baking contest on Thursday night.
New events to the market include: “Putt Putt for Produce” Contest, Coupon Night and Reinhardt Spirit Nigh—during Homecoming football week in the fall. All market dates and special events are posted on the University Calendar at www.reinhardt.edu
Hometown Spirit
“The Market was initially established to bring us together as a community and revive the appreciation for our small town; it has done that and so much more,” said White.
“It has created such a positive spirit for Waleska and Reinhardt University that I’ve never found anywhere else.” “There will be so much fresh produce and home-made goods offered by our local community members at this year’s markets,” he said. “Be sure to come out and enjoy the beautiful evenings at the Waleska Farmers Market in downtown Waleska!”
