By Hinton Bolinger
Waleska, Ga- Reinhardt University Wrestling Team wrestled their last two home matches for the season this past week. It started first with two AAC conference matches on Thursday night. Reinhardt Eagles faced off with Allen University and West Virginia Tech. The Eagles started the night off with a blowout win over Allen (56-0) and a dominant performance over West Virginia Tech (48-3). Those two wins boosted Reinhardt to a perfect record in conference duals (4-0) with one more conference match left in the season that will be wrestled February 2nd.
Along with the two fantastic wins on Thursday night, the Eagles set a new standard for themselves on Sunday afternoon. They started the day with a 33-12 win over NAIA rival Southeastern University, who is ranked 13th (tied with Reinhardt) nationally. After their dominant performance over Southeastern, the team had a match to rest while the University of The Cumberlands wrestled against Southeastern, who are both Mid-South Conference foes. After Cumberlands defeated Southeastern in a commanding bout, the Eagles would then face off with the 5th ranked Patriots. This would be Reinhardt’s toughest match of the year so far. The Eagles took control early, leading 16-12 going into the 174lbs matchup. Michael Carew would then put the Eagles up 20-12. The Patriots have then deducted a team point for “Control of Mat Area” making the score 20-11. Then the 1st ranked 184 pounder Antonio Stewart would give the team 6 more points with a fall. The Eagles would then lose the last two bouts by pin, making the final team score 26-23. This win clutched an undefeated at home season, with one match left against AAC foe St. Andrews in Lynchburg, NC. The team is now looking ahead to the conference tournament that will be held at Truett McConnell on February 16th.
