Stonehenge

After the movie This is Spinal Tap, it’s hard not to snicker at the mention of Stonehenge. But it’s very interesting news that a team of archaeologists, using a number of different techniques including a magnetometer and ground-penetrating radar (GPR), has just produced the most detailed map ever of the earth beneath and around that great neolithic monument in Wiltshire. Among the finds: the stone circle was only one of seventeen cult sites in the area.

Here is a picture of a giant helping Merlin build Stonehenge, from BL Edgerton 3028. Geoffrey of Monmouth came up with the story, although the manuscript is of Wace’s Roman de Brut.
